Municipal Election coming soon: let's talk about the School Committee

I wonder how many city residents, especially parents of school age children that attend Attleboro Public Schools, know that current School Committee chair, Robbie Wiullimere [sorry about the spelling here], in her day job, works for a man by the name of "Durkin"?

Yup, it's the husband of Attleboro Public Schools Superintendent, Pia Durkin. Now, try to convince me that this is NOT a conflict-of-interest!

BTW, does the current Superintendent recognize that she works for the representative body for the parents and guardians of the local public school enrollees, the School Committee - - - AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND??? Is there ANY evidence that she does? Who does she think that she reports to, anyway? Or does she think that the entire world reports to her?

Okay, maybe that's a bit strong. But, she surely is wrong if she thinks that she reports to the mayor.

I dunno; does anybody care? I know that Brenda Furtado does.

You are spot-on with several of your points, too bad these small-town politics of a School Comm often come down to personality contests and sniping at a low-life level. All in the name of what's best for the students, right? Shame on many!

Thank you for the kind words.

It is very good that we got five (5) new faces on the committee . . . and got ever-so-close to six (6). But I
wonder if five or six is enough to overcome the "style" of the current committee: letting Mrs. Durkin
continue to "try to get the doggies to jump through the hoop".

On the Council side, it's a bit of a mixed bag . . . though it is, on balance, an improvement, IMO. Without any doubt, Richard Conti will be a fantastic asset to the Council. I predict great things for him and by him.
I envision him in a leadership role very soon. I have to wonder if a "rookie" has ever placed first in the
at-large voting before. Could it be a precedent?

It's good to gain Cherie Felos: obviously an experience, knowledgeable person. But "the jury is out"
as to how much she'll be her own person exclusively, versus how much she "plays along".

Duff White is not a bad person by any means. He won a close race against John Davis. Either one
would be a good councilor. The problem with White is the people he "owes" that helped him get
elected. All in all, Ward Five would have been better off to keep a real independent and intelligent
councilor: Jerry Chase.
