Summing up the Summer

Summer is finally here. I know, I know, it officially started a few weeks ago, but it seems here in New England things don’t really get cookin’ until Fourth of July weekend.  Even the weather finally realizes that it is supposed to be hot every day and not just once or twice a week … like our Junes seem to be now. -- Can’t really get a handle on the Red Sox. I don’t know if it’s because expectations are so high that I’m just waiting for the playoffs to start or there is still somewhat of a…See More

Yeah, but what about my fantasy team . . .

So the NFL has officially locked out the players, didn’t see that one coming ... So the players have decertified their union, that was a real blindside … Now the whole mess is likely to end up in court and be settled by a bunch of pencil-necked lawyers, another shocker … I just wish the CBA deadline had been extended to the first week of April, at least that way the start of baseball season would knock it off the front pages ... So now millionaires and billionaires will fight over how to divide…See More

The most wonderful time of the year

It's finally football season! And with the way the Sox summer went this year, it couldn't come soon enough. Talk about frustrating, the Sox just could never put together that one big run to truly threaten the Yankees or Rays. Still, kudos to Terry Francona for keeping a team with as many Triple-A and four-A players as regulars within striking distance right up until Labor Day.Now back to football! In today's Sun Chronicle is our annual high school and college preview section. If you don't get…See More

Summer time muse

A couple of things to be on the lookout for as we hit the midpoint of summer:n One of the great local events I’ve ever seen or heard of will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – the Attleboro Area Golf Association’s Men’s Open Championship. For those of you not familiar with the tournament, local golfers tee it up on four local courses on four consecutive days with cuts after the first two rounds. The tournament has a kind of PGA-feel to it as the gallery follows the leaders and…See More

Go get Gonzo

I know it’s way too early to pass judgment on the 2010 Boston Red Sox, but here I am waiting for my grass to dry enough to get out mow, so here goes a little Sunday morning musing:I’m not one to clamor for the Sox to have a lineup full of big boppers, the game has changed. Take a look at last year’s stats, not one AL player hit 40 home runs. But I do think the Sox need to have that one intimidator, that one basher in the lineup that puts a scare into opposing teams when the game is on the line.…See More

Pros and cons

Thought I’d diverge from the usual high school/local sports chatter for a bit:Had a night off last night so I was able to sit and watch a Celtics game from start to finish instead of glancing up from my computer screen when the crowd roars or Tommy Heinsohn goes into one of his conniption fits over the officiating … Overall what I’ve seen and what was confirmed Thursday night is that something is missing. Way too many blown leads this season, and even though last night’s game was in Orlando,…See More

Mid-term report

Closing in on the halfway point of the winter season, some interesting storylines are beginning to development among our local high school athletic teams:Perhaps the one that has created the most buzz (sorry for the bad pun) has been the play of the undefeated boys’ basketball team at Mansfield High. The Hornets ran their record to 8-0 Tuesday night after crushing Sharon, but face their biggest challenge of the season Friday night against perennial league power Franklin. The Hornets seem to…See More
