I know most of you maybe reading this probably couldn't care less about horse racing. But seeing how the Belmont Stakes (horse racing's third and final race of the Triple Crown) is upon us, I figured I'd share this column I wrote, which ran June 21, 2008... you'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll always think of me the next time you hear the words Belmont Stakes.

Some observations from one of the busiest sports weeks of the year:

**Nice to see that the Tampa Bay Rays turned back into their old selves for the season opener... or maybe it was actually just Josh Beckett who turned back into his old self. Then again, I can’t really speak much on the opener, seeing as how I didn’t watch one pitch of it, but the box score is really all I needed to see...

We’re on page three of the calendar, so that means all the well-intended resolutionists who got gym memberships for the new year have pretty much been weeded out. A few have hung in there and become recognizable but for the most part the familiar faces now are the same as they were when I signed up about nine years ago.

The gym, or fitness center rather, to which I belong is part of a hotel, so once in a while you’ll have some hotel guests working out, and they usually stand out like sore thumb… Continue
