THE DIXIE DIEHARDS JAZZ BAND BOOKING: rick260@comcast.net

Welcome to Grassroots Jazz, a site for jazz musicians, jazz fans, and those who are simply curious.
When I was just a "boy with a horn" -- about 10 -- I was introduced to the cornet. At a time when most of my musically-conscious friends wanted to be the next John Lennon, I wanted to be the next Louis Armstrong. Two things were markedly different about us, however: pigmentation and talent.

Nevertheless, jazz has held a long-term fascination for me and after 30 years of jobs, kids and houses, I'm finally back where I started--playing in three bands that perform various kinds of jazz. You'll find my Dixieland and New Orleans jazz band at www.dixiediehards.com.

I also write about jazz as well as folk and acoustic music in the GO section of The Sun Chronicle, where I have a weekly column.

At Grassroots Jazz you'll find jazz artist profiles, jazz news and a monthly calendar of jazz events in southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Dig, man!

So You Want to Play Trombone -- on iPhone?

So you fancy yourself the next Tommy Dorsey but don't actually own a trombone?

There's a solution, and Spoonjack has it with its new iBone application. All you need is an Apple iPhone or iPod.

Just go online, download the app, and you can play your digital trombine by touching the notes on your iPhone or iPod's touchscreen. You're in the band!

We haven't tested the app, but based on YouTube samples we'd have to say it's pretty basic. No glissandos here. Nevert… Continue

Thank you! Yes, all the photography is mine - I spent July-December 2007 traveling and studying in South America and January-May 2008 doing research in Uganda and Rwanda. They were both incredible experiences! I'm really hoping to go back again soon but due to mounting college loans I really can't afford to right now. One day though!
