Editors often say that a writer's work need not be a classic.
That's not true for Gareth Hinds.
The Boston resident just finished adapting Homer's "The Odyssey" into a nearly 250-page painted graphic novel, scheduled for release next October from Candlewick Press.
Candlewick previously published Gareth's rendition of Beowulf, and of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice.
Gareth appeared at the Wellesley Booksmith in Wellesley on Nov. 6.
He also discussed his latest project with the 'Word.

By day, they’re teachers, lawyers, students ... even reporters for great metropolitan newspapers. This weekend, about 4,000 of them will reveal their secret identity.
Boston’s Back Bay Events Center will transform into Avengers Mansion — or the Justice League of America’s Watchtower, if you prefer — for Boston Comic Con.
Organizers hope to draw 4,000 people over two days, significantly more than the 2,600 who showed up for last April’s Comic Con, publicist Colin Solan says.
Among the main draws…

If fans get a special vibe from David Mack's work, they've gotten his message.
Whether it's his creator-owned Kabuki series or Marvel's Daredevil, Mack follows his artistic inclinations rather than stylistic traditions.
His stories aren't pages of nine panels of fight scenes. They require the reader to commit to the page.
"I love the idea of testing the edges of what has been done with the format of the medium and approaching it with a whimsical idea of having fun and toying with the rich his…

When the Tick and Arthur leaped over buildings, Sean Wang knew those building designs inside and out.
Sean graduated from MIT with an architecture degree.
"I actually studied architecture at MIT with every intention of being an architect, until I realized I had no real passion for it, at least not in the same way I had passion for drawing comics," Sean says. "So upon graduation, I shifted gears and tried to land a job as a comic penciller.
"Over time, I came to realize that there weren’t a lo…

Khoi Pham may be the only artist who can say he's gone from statutes to stature.
The native New Englander was a trial lawyer when his first comic book assignments came.
Now he's the regular artist on Marvel's Mighty Avengers, a team that includes the size-changing Stature, the teenaged daughter of Ant-Man Scott Lang, now deceased.
Khoi will be appearing at the Boston Comic Con, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 24-25 at Boston's Back Bay Events Center, 180 Berkeley St.

Spoiler warning for those who haven't seen the house ad in Blackest Night #3:
Ladies and gentlemen, James Robinson's new JLA ...
Green Lantern Hal Jordan: No surprise, since starting a group focused on justice was his idea (Cry For Justice #1). I'm eager to see how long his "I am the law" mantra lasts.
Green Arrow Oliver Queen: Again, no surprise, since he and Jordan left the Watchtower together in CFJ #1, and they're inseparable. The one problem I have is that Red Arrow was on…

One of Jim Calafiore's upcoming projects is a secret.
Specifically, DC's Secret Six.
The veteran penciller is drawing Secret Six #15, due out Nov. 4.
The issue features Deadshot and is written by John Ostrander, with whom Jim once worked on Valiant Comics' Magnus Robot Fighter.
"We hadn't worked on anything since then, so this was a great opportunity to collaborate again," Jim says.
"And, when I was younger, I got the whole Suicide Squad run, and the Deadshot mini he did around that time. H…

Artist Mark McKenna has redefined "crossover."
Known best for a 24-year inking career covering such titles as Dr. Strange: Sorceror Supreme and Countdown, Mark has moved into children's books as well.
He and his father co-created Banana Tail, an ongoing children's book series about a monkey who awakens to find that "his brown tail has turned yellow," Mark says.
"He thinks that because of his love for bananas that the old adage that 'you are what eat' is coming to fruition," Mark says.
"Once…

Most comic book artists draw heroes who fly.
Scott Wegener learned to fly, then became a comic book artist.
The artist and co-creator of Red 5 Comics' Atomic Robo was a flight school instructor in New Hampshire for years before landing his first gig drawing people who fly.
These days, the Wilton, N.H. resident focuses on Robo with co-creator and writer Brian Clevinger, letterer Jeff Powell and colorist Ronda Pattison. In 2008, the character's first mini-series, which ran six issues, was nomin…
