I have gone to some lengths to avoid hating anybody on this planet, but yesterday I had to tell Bill Gouveia outright: I hate you.
A note to the same effect will be going out soon to Steve Holt.
And Rusty D'Arconte, my boss, I've hated several times over.
And I learn just now that old pal Mike Verdoia earned my hatred three and a half months ago.
Good people. Each one of them is a follower of the Golden Rule and a good person. And I have to admit that each of them has been a source of much entertainment over these years, But they went and had grandchildren recently. I can hardly say their names now without spitting.
They have grandchildren. I have a new dulcimer on the way. It is a beautiful thing, as you can see by the photo posted on my page, but I am not even close. Not the same ball park. Not the same league. Not the .... you get the drift.
They have grandchildren. I'm getting a new dulcimer that will give me hours and hours of pleasure, It will never need its diapers changed. Neither will it ever need to be taken on hikes or fishing. I might get away with holding it on my lap on a carousel, but it would look damn silly in the seat next to me at McCoy Stadium. And even if has fresh ears for my oldest jokes, it won't laugh back or, better, groan.... I am really getting screwed here. Life is not fair.
I hate them.

Old pals Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly added a third grandchild to their clan about a year ago, but I missed the blessed event. To Aub and Elwood: I hate you triply.

Add Dave McCarthy's name to my "I hate you" list. Grandson came along a few weeks ago and he hasn't stopped smiling yet (hope you get cramps in your cheeks, Dave; that'll learn you.)

Extremism is passionate, mediocrity is uncaring.

Like you, I've been called many things. But never grandpa. Maybe someday.
