No matter how it's dressed up, it's still animal abuse

Horse racing fans were quick to come to the defense of the "sport" that on Sunday left a majestic animal dead, claiming such injuries happen in all sports ... well, not quite. A broken ankle does not end an NBA player's life.

William C. Rhoden, writing for the New York Times, said it best after witnessing Sunday's horrorshow called the Kentucky Derby. "This is bullfighting," he wrote.

Bullfighting is outlawed in the United States for good reason. So should horse racing.

He ends his brilliant essay with a question that we should all be asking:
"Thoroughbred racing is a brutal sport. Why do we keep giving it a pass?"
