Being a native of Fall River, I'm used to the insults -- dangerous city, criminals, drugs, rundown, etc.

Of course these remarks about the Spindle City are always made by people who know as little about Fall River as I do the Red Sox ... not much.

These people (lots seem to come from Attleboro) don't know the true gems in Fall River, like the Portuguese restaraunts, the beautiful Victorian homes, the stunning block-long granite mills, the steep hills, the old-world traditions that contiune to this day: Hartley's Pork Pies (made the same way as when they were 100 years ago in Liverpool and Blackpool, England); white vinegar on fries (that's why there is a vinegar bottle on every restaurant table in the city); a rich history with more architectual beauty on one block than can be found in all of Attleboro; beautiful brick smokestacks that reach to the sky (yes, I have a great love for industrial design); steep hills; cobbled-stone streets; a strong Portuguese culture and French culture that continues today with feasts, film festivals, and other cultural events; and probably one of the best music clubs around, The Narrows.

Most of the time, I can brush off the dumb remarks made about my native city. But when it comes to Lizzie Borden, all bets are off.

I've found that most people in the world are simply clueless when it comes to the most basic fact of Fall River's most famous resident. They think she killed her father and stepmother with an az.

The truth is Lizzie Borden was found innocent of the crimes. End of story.

But now some joker in Salem has decided to open a Lizzie Borden musem.

This is funny simply because Lizzie Borden had nothing to do with Salem. It's not known if she ever even visited it.

Leonard Pickel, the opportunist in question here who apparently has been drinking a bit too much of Salem's witches brew, says he doesn't know "who owns Lizzie Borden" but promises to tell the "true story" of her life.

Is this guy out to lunch or what? What does he mean he doesn't know "who owns" Lizzie Borden?

Um, Mr. Pickel, Lizzie is a Fall River native who lived there her entire life, up until her death at a very old age.
Her homes, (and body) are in Fall River as was her heart her entire life. She left all her money (a vast amount in the day) to the Fall River Animal Rescue League. Mr. Pickel, please stick to your broomsticks.

I admit Craig, I used to make the Fall River jokes, but it was only with friends who knew I was kidding and lived there their entire lives. Eddie Fernandez, whom I worked with at Stop & Shop, is like you, born and raised, and still lives in Fall River. He has no qualms about living there, and also owns a business there. His kids have gone through Fall River schools, and have done well. I can also admit the only time I have gone to Fall River was to visit the USS Massachusetts, which I always enjoyed; divorce court; and when I had jury duty. I have nothing against FR, it is beautiful with the Victorian homes and scenic views from the hills. Having grown up in Somerville aka Slumerville, etc., I know what you mean. Didn't Fall River also earn the "All America City" award at one time? I know Somerville did, when I was a kid; I thought FR got it too.

Well put, Craig. Lizzie and Salem don't seem to match up well.
