If NA Registry office closes, how about Patriot Place?

If I'm Robert Kraft and I read the following article by staff writer Amy DeMelia, I'd be on the phone to the registrar of the Mass. Registry of Motor Vehicles, Rachel Kaprielian, in an instant to inquire about relocating the North Attleboro office to one of many vacant storefronts in Patriot Place.

Here are the first few paragraphs of Amy's article:

NORTH ATTLEBORO - The North Attleboro branch of the Registry of Motor Vehicles is among those slated to close, according to state Rep. Betty Poirier.

Poirier, R-North Attleboro, said a letter was sent out today to the North Attleboro branch's landlord indicating that the branch, located on Kelley Boulevard, will close. She did not know when the closure would take place, however.

A spokeswoman for the registry had no immediate comment.

"It's absolutely insane," Poirier said of the move. "They are closing the registry in a place like North Attleboro where there is no public transportation to Brockton or Taunton, which are the closest places with registry branches."

Obviously, a lot of people in the Attleboro area will be inconvenienced if the North Attleboro office closes. But that location is antiquated, waits have become ridiculous, and parking is often a problem. So why not put an office where people can make a long day at the RMV an event?

There are plenty of storefronts going unused at Patriot Place. Why not put a full-service branch of the RMV there? Plenty of parking, plus shops, restaurants and other diversions to make a trip worthwhile. Also, having the RMV on site would ensure more foot traffic for Patriot Place in the winter months, when people don't want to meander around an outdoor shopping mall for no good reason.

Patriot Place is centrally located and would serve the needs of residents of the commonwealth in a large area between the offices in Worcester, Milford, Framingham, Taunton, Brockton and Fall River.

It only makes sense. C'mon, Bob -- it's another possible revenue stream that will actually serve average, every-day Joes and Jills instead of just the Brookline mob that crams into Davio's on the weekend.
