Pats-Bucs hots and nots, and game notes.

Here are my off-the-telly hots and nots from Sunday's game at Wembley Stadium against the Buccaneers, in which the Patriots played just well enough to humble an 0-7 team (don't think today's effort would have beaten the Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium, though). Still, a win is a win, and it sends the Patriots into the bye week at 5-2 (Game notes added at 6:40 p.m.).

WHO'S HOT

WES WELKER: The game's No. 1 star in my book. He caught all 10 passes thrown at him for 107 yards and a touchdown, ran one end-around for 6 yards and had four punt returns for 53 yards. The only thing the Patriots haven't asked Welker to do is don the Pat Patriot mascot costume.

TOM BRADY: For a while, this was perilously close to being a "not" or "lukewarm" because of the two interceptions. But he completed 23 of 32 passes for 308 yards with three TD passes. It was the 26th 300-yard game in his career, tying him for the team lead with Drew Bledsoe.

BRANDON MERIWEATHER: Two interceptions in the first six minutes, including one for a score, and as Bill Belichick said, "a lot of positive things that don't show up in the stat sheets."

SAM AIKEN: His 54-yard catch-and-run score was the Patriots' longest play of the year and his first career touchdown.

TULLY BANTA-CAIN: Released for clerical purposes early in the week, he responded with five tackles (two for losses) and a good job of pressuring the Bucs' QBs.

DAN CONNOLLY: He's starting to be noticed in his new role as the Mike Vrabel/Russ Hochstein short-yardage fullback.

WHO'S NOT

LOGAN MANKINS: The veteran guard seems to be prone to mental lapses this year, and he bollixed up quite a few plays Sunday, with three false starts and one holding call.

CHRIS HANSON: See next entry for more on this, but he had one punt deflected and seemed to be dodging Bucs in every attempt.

PUNT BLOCKING: The Bucs obviously saw something on film that convinced them they could go after the Patriots' punter. Whether it was a slow stride before the kick or a breakdown in the blocking, better teams will exploit any problems more effectively if the Patriots don't fix it.

WHO'S LUKEWARM

DARIUS BUTLER: The rookie cornerback from UConn was beaten badly on the Bucs' only touchdown pass, but he also contributed an interception.

SEBASTIAN VOLLMER: The rookie tackle from Deutschland did a great job of lead blocking on Wes Welker's screen-pass TD in the first half. But later, when he was nicked up a little, he committed two holding calls on the same drive and was perilously close to a third.

LAURENCE MARONEY: He scored a TD, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. But he didn't run well early, forcing Brady & Co. to the possession passing game. He was a little better in the second half and finished with 43 yards on 13 carries. It's looking more and more that the only time he shines is when he's in totally open space.

THE DEFENSIVE LINE: There were some strong performances, particularly Myron Pryor and Mike Wright getting pressure on the QB. But I thought they were soft against the run early in the game, which might have been a vulnerability to a better team that didn't have to abandon the run as the deficit grew.
