The Patriots now have two linebackers named Burgess on the roster with their trade of a seventh-round draft pick to the Baltimore Ravens for third-year veteran Prescott Burgess.
Burgess (not to be confused with Derrick Burgess, who came from Oakland and plays more of a pass-rushing defensive end) was about to be released by the Ravens early Tuesday, so why trade for him? The Patriots apparently believed that because Burgess did not have the necessary career experience to gain free agency upon his release and had to go through the waiver process, another team would have claimed him before they would have been eligible to do so.
Offensive lineman Ryan Wendell, one of 10 OLs on the roster but a contributor on special teams, was waived to make room for Burgess.
Burgess has spent much of his brief career on the injured reserve list, but right now, the Patriots are in desperate need of warm bodies in their linebacking corps.
I would imagine the Ravens, who play the Patriots two Sundays from now, felt confident enough that the compensation of a seventh-round pick was more than enough to offset whatever "secrets" he may be able to tell the Patriots' coaching staff about how they plan to attack the New England offense.
That also lends a little more credence to the supposition that nobody's really afraid of the Patriots any more.
