It's always nice to see how hometown papers treat their sports heroes after they've gone away and made their fortunes elsewhere.
Here's a link to a story in the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald on Patriots' offensive lineman Russ Hochstein, who recently signed autographs in his home area during this short break between the OTAs, minicamps and training program and the start of training camp on July 30.
Obviously, the Patriots had no problem with Russ talking to his hometown paper. I wish the same could be said of the Indianapolis Colts, who continue to stonewall my efforts to talk to former Mansfield High wide receiver Brett McDermott, a Holy Cross product who's heading back to the great American Midwest in August to take part in the Colts' training camp. I've chatted with Brett briefly in the past two weeks, but we agreed that no formal interview would take place before the Colts gave him the OK because I certainly don't want him to run afoul of any team rules.
In any event, I hope to be able to speak to him soon for an on-the-record interview. I promise not to ask him to give me a copy of the Colts' playbook.
Enjoy
this story about Russ Hochstein, who looks to continue to play a valuable role for the Patriots this year as a backup lineman and occasional insertion as a blocking back or third tight end.
